At Comfort Couch

We believe in an holistic approach to health and wellness

We utilise a range of Modalities to support you. We tailor a plan specific to your needs, as different treatment approaches work best for different conditions. Some of the modalities we use and draw from include, but are not limited to the following:

CTP
CBT
IFS
MiCBT
CTP - Complex Trauma Professional

Complex Trauma Professional have undertaken courses to allow clinicians to learn evidence-based practices to help heal complex trauma, including difficult symptoms such as intense abreactions/flashbacks; severe “depression-like” shutdown and avoidance; dissociation; relational difficulties and challenges; chronic emotional and somatic dysregulation, chronic pain and psychotic symptoms.

CBT - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a short-term, problem focused therapy that aims to help clients identify and change thinking and behaviour patterns that lead to distress. CBT is fundamentally concerned with the meanings that people make of their experiences as it is these meanings that give rise to our feelings.

Through CBT you'll work to identify unhelpful thoughts and interpretations, then replace them with more helpful thoughts and ideas. CBT therapists can assign homework or even worksheets, so CBT works best when you're willing to do work on your own, outside of therapy.

IFS - Internal Family Systems

The Internal Family Systems Model takes the view that the mind is made up of relatively discrete sub-personalities (parts) and assumes that all parts contain valuable qualities, have good intentions and are all welcome. The model also posits that our core self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. The IFS paradigm is based in the belief that it can assist people to heal and help the world become a more compassionate place.

MiCBT - Mindfulness Integrated CBT

MiCBT is a four-stage therapeutic approach that integrates mindfulness and some of the basic principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in order to help people improve the way they feel and change unhelpful behaviours.

However, MiCBT helps people make changes in a different way to CBT. While CBT attempts to change maladaptive behaviour by modifying people’s unrealistic thoughts and beliefs, MiCBT tries to help people learn to develop control over the processes that maintain the unrealistic thoughts and beliefs through mindfulness training. MiCBT helps change the process of thinking, not just the content of our thoughts.

EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy was originally designed to help people cope with the after effects of trauma and was used extensively with people suffering from PTSD. However, EMDR  is now more broadly applied to a range of issues including attachment, anxiety, depression, phobias, addiction, eating disorders, shame and general negative beliefs about oneself or the world.

According to the theory behind the approach, traumatic and painful memories can get stuck and not processed properly. EMDR aims to reduce symptoms of distress by changing how your memories are stored in your brain. Put simply, EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation (which can be a specific set of eye movements, sounds or vibrations) as you talk to your therapist. The bilateral stimulation helps your brain process information slightly differently, making it possible for you to reintegrate traumatic/distressing memories, not be so controlled by fear or past strongly held unhelpful beliefs.

ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and commitment therapy is an action-oriented approach to psychotherapy that stems from traditional behavior therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Clients learn to stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions and, instead, accept that these deeper feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations that should not prevent them from moving forward in their lives. With this understanding, clients begin to accept their issues and hardships and commit to making necessary changes in their behaviour, regardless of what is going on in their lives, and how they feel about it.

DBT - Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

DBT, a form of cognitive behaviour therapy, is designed to help people change unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving while also accepting who they are. It helps you learn to manage your emotions by letting you recognise, experience and accept them. DBT can also help you understand why you might harm yourself, so you are more likely to change your harmful behaviour.

DBT is usually used to help people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. People with this disorder feel intense, uncontrollable emotions, have troubled relationships and have a disturbed sense of self.

CBT-E - CBT for Eating Disorder Treatment

CBT-E is one of the most effective treatments for eating disorders. It is a “transdiagnostic” treatment for all forms of eating disorder including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and other similar states.

CBT-E is a highly individualised treatment. It is designed to fit the person's difficulties like a glove and be modified in light of his or her progress.

FBT - Family Based Therapy (for eating disorders)

FBT is an intensive treatment for children and adolescents with recent onset (less than 3 years) anorexia nervosa (AN). FBT places parents at the centre of the young person’s recovery by charging them with the task of “renourishing their starving child”. This approach requires a multidisciplinary team. The family is supported by an FBT clinician along with a medical practitioner, who monitors the young person’s physical health. Psychiatrists and Dietiticians are also part of a treatment team.  When treating eating disorders, families are a professional’s greatest ally.

PBS - Positive Behaviour Support and Tuning Into Kids and Teens

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an individualised and comprehensive approach that parents and carers implement to facilitate more positive behaviours.

Tuning into Kids and Teens is an evidence based, emotion-focused parenting program that that aims to teach parents and carers skills in recognising, understanding and managing their own and their children's emotions.

CT - Couples Therapy (Gottman Method)

The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy that includes a thorough assessment of the couple’s relationship and integrates research-based interventions based on the Sound Relationship House Theory. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

SST - Single Session Thinking & SSFC - Single Session Family Consultation

Single Session Thinking (SST) is an approach which makes the most of each encounter with clients by treating each contact, but especially the first, as though it may be the only contact, while laying the foundation for ongoing work, if required and requested by the client.

Single session family consultation is a time-limited and structured process for engaging and meeting with families to help them identify and address their needs.
